Life and historical reference points

Matthew appears among the Twelve. The account of his call, in Matthew 9, depicts a tax collector leaving his post to follow Jesus; the parallels in Mark and Luke name him Levi. Christian tradition brings these figures together and attributes the first Gospel to Matthew. This book emphasizes the fulfillment of the Scriptures, Jesus’ teaching, and the life of the disciples.

Recognizing his representations

The winged man or angel of the tetramorph, the book, and the writing instruments identify him. A purse may evoke his former occupation, in contrast with the call to follow Jesus.

What must be distinguished

The symbol of the angel does not mean that Matthew is an angelic being. The traditional attribution of the Gospel is distinct from historical questions about its composition. The routes of his mission and the circumstances of his martyrdom are reported in various ways.

Understanding his spiritual legacy

The meal with tax collectors helps us understand mercy and the call to change. Reading the Sermon on the Mount then makes it possible to explore the ethical scope of the Gospel associated with his name.

Feast, memorial, and intercession

The date indicated refers to the Roman Rite or the specified local usage. The actual celebration may vary according to the calendar of the year. In the Catholic faith, asking for a saint’s intercession means asking the saint to pray to God; it does not mean attributing independent power to the saint. An image or devotional object may accompany this practice but is not necessary for prayer.
