What does the Pythagorean Tetractys mean?

3 min read

The Tetractys is a triangle formed by ten points arranged in four rows: one point at the top, followed by two, three, and four at the base. It occupies a major place in ancient accounts devoted to Pythagoreanism. The total 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 equals ten, a number to which tradition attributes a value of fulfillment. The relationships between these first numbers also provide the proportions of the principal musical intervals. The Tetractys thus unites geometry, arithmetic, and harmony.

How is the Tetractys constructed?

One point is placed at the top, then two below it, three on the next line, and four at the base. The rows form an equilateral triangle if the points are evenly spaced.

The sum of these four rows is ten. It is the fourth triangular number, an elementary mathematical property that the Pythagorean tradition elevates as an image of totality.

What do the ancient authors recount?

Some texts attribute to the Pythagoreans an oath sworn by the Tetractys. Iamblichus and other authors of Late Antiquity transmit this tradition in accounts devoted to Pythagoras.

These sources are later than the philosopher himself. Their testimony is important for the history of Pythagoreanism, but does not authorize us to claim that every detail of their commentary dates directly back to the sixth century BCE.

Why are the numbers 1 to 4 associated with harmony?

The ratios 2:1, 3:2, and 4:3 correspond respectively to the octave, fifth, and fourth in the theory of musical intervals.

The Tetractys thus brings together, in four rows of small numbers, ratios used to understand consonances. This relationship explains its status in traditions that connect arithmetic and music.

Why does the triangle become a cosmological figure?

Pythagorean and Neopythagorean philosophers sought principles of order in numbers. The Tetractys provides an image in which the transition from unity to multiplicity unfolds according to a regular structure.

Some commentators relate its rows to the point, line, surface, and volume. These philosophical interpretations should be attributed to their authors and periods rather than brought together under a common doctrine.

How did the Tetractys enter Western occultism?

Hermetic Renaissance, followed by modern occult societies, revived the Tetractys as an emblem of the harmony of number. Some figures inscribe Hebrew letters or planetary correspondences in it.

The triangular shape remains the basis of the design, but its specifically Pythagorean dimension lies in the ten points and the musical proportions.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, “Iamblichus” examines the value and limitations of Neopythagorean sources. Euclid, Elements, Book XIII illustrates the use of proportions in classical Greek geometry.
