What does the bindu, the central point of yantras, mean?

3 min read

The bindu, a Sanskrit word meaning notably “point” or “drop,” plays a central role in several traditions of Hindu ritual diagrams. At the heart of a yantra, the point may mark the principal place of divine presence and the culmination of a progression from the outer forms. The Śrī Yantra, dedicated to the goddess in the Śrī Vidyā tradition, provides a famous example: its triangles converge toward a central bindu. Nevertheless, the meaning of this point depends on the tradition and diagram being studied.

Sanskrit term Bindu
Form Central point or small mark
Tradition Yantras and Hindu Tantrism
Major example Śrī Yantra / Śrī Cakra
Function Ritual center and point of convergence

What is a bindu?

A point has neither area nor dimension in Euclidean geometry. In ritual diagrams, a small visible mark represents this theoretically dimensionless place.

The word bindu can also designate a drop or particular realities in different tantric systems. It should therefore not be made into a universal and automatic translation of “source of the universe.”

Why is the center of a yantra important?

A yantra organizes several forms - triangles, circles, lotuses, and enclosures - around a central focus. This focus may refer to the principal deity and constitute the culmination of the ritual reading of the drawing.

The center is therefore not merely a draftsman's reference point: it contributes to the religious structure of the composition.

What place does the bindu occupy in the Śrī Cakra?

The Śrī Yantra consists of nine large interlocking triangles, rings of petals, and an outer enclosure. Its central point corresponds to the bindu, associated with the presence of the goddess Tripurasundarī.

Geometry is a form of devotional language specific to the Śrī Vidyā tradition. A Western concentric circle does not automatically have the same meaning.

Why can a point organize the entire design?

In geometry, choosing a center makes it possible to draw concentric circles, axes, and regular divisions. The center serves as a constant reference as the figures develop around it.

This characteristic enables a strong symbolic reading of radiance and return. But spiritual meaning requires knowledge of the ritual to which the figure belongs.

Does the bindu correspond to the point in the solar symbol?

The solar glyph ☉ is also a circle with a central point. This geometric resemblance permits comparison, not historical identification.

The planetary glyph belongs to the vocabulary of Western astrology; the bindu of yantras is understood within specific Tantric traditions. One is not the ancient translation of the other.

Historical sources and reference points

ReligionFacts, “Sri Yantra” describes the central bindu in the Śrī Cakra, referring in particular to the Oxford Concise Dictionary of World Religions. Euclid, Elements, Book I, definition of a point provides the mathematical framework for comparison.
