The Valley of No Return

3 min read

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (in southern Finistère, to be precise). It is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and more or less well-known magical practices (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Standing Stones, and many others). Thus, to shed light on our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

Let us discover together the legend of the Valley of No Return. A place that truly exists in the famous forest of Brocéliande, it should be visited with caution and, above all... sincerity. Also called the Perilous Valley or the Valley of False Lovers, it is above all the private domain of the Fairy Morgana, who watches over the purity of the heart of every visitor who enters it...

Valley of No Return

The Valley of No Return is a legendary place rooted in the Arthurian cycle and Celtic legends. It is best known for its association with the fairy Morgana, King Arthur's half-sister, a figure who is both fascinating and enigmatic in these tales. This magical and mysterious place carries within it a story of magic, fidelity, and... punishment.

According to legend, the Fairy Morgana had made a habit of eagerly going to this valley to meet the love of her life, the knight Guyomarc'h. One fine day, as she was heading there as usual, she caught her knight with another young woman.

Fairy Morgana

Furious with rage and possessing Merlin's powers, she turned them to stone using the elements of fire and ice. Thus appeared the Rock of the False Lovers, an eternal and stark symbol of the romantic betrayal suffered by the Fairy Morgana. It should be known that Morgana was a disciple of Merlin and renowned for her immense knowledge, particularly her ability to control the elements and pass into the Otherworld. Despite her generous and benevolent nature, it was therefore very risky to anger her.

However, her hatred spread throughout the valley: she decided to turn it into a trap for all unfaithful lovers. Through her magic, she enchanted the valley so that any unfaithful man who entered it would become trapped, unable to find his way back. Only genuine proof of fidelity or the intervention of pure love could break the enchantment and free the captives. Thus was born the Valley of No Return.

Legend has it that many knights trapped in the Valley of No Return wandered without hope of escape, confronted with their own failures and deceptions until someone courageous and pure of heart enough came to their rescue.

The knight Lancelot of the Lake, the most faithful of Arthur's knights, but also Queen Guinevere's lover, would be their liberator. Thanks to his pure love and unwavering fidelity toward Guinevere, as well as a magical ring created by the Fairy Viviane (the origin of the famous sword Excalibur), Lancelot managed to break Morgana's enchantment and free the prisoners of the Valley. However, the Fairy Morgana did not intend to give in so easily and summoned demonic apparitions to hinder Lancelot, who continued his quest to free them, aware that it was all only an illusion.

Knight Lancelot of the Lake

Morgana realized that there was nothing she could do and finally broke her enchantment to free the knights.

Thus ends the legend... or almost. No one really knows whether Morgana, out of vengeance, has allowed her magic to continue operating over the Valley of No Return ever since. So beware, hikers with hearts a little too bold: the Fairy Morgana may be watching you.
