The Knight Bran

2 min read

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small company based in Brittany (in southern Finistère, to be precise). And it is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices, more or less well known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Lady Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

This week, head to northern Finistère, along one of the most beautiful coasts in Brittany, toward Kerlouan, on the Pointe de Neïz Vran, home to the legend of the knight Bran...

Kerlouan

It is in this place that an ancient legend tells the story of an epic battle fought by Even the Great in the 10th century against invaders from the North.

Even, the illustrious Breton leader, succeeded in repelling the attackers, forcing them into a hasty retreat. However, as they fled, the invaders captured several prisoners, including the beloved grandson of Count Even, a young man known as Bran, meaning "the crow." Bran, the divine bird of the Celts, would never again see the shores of his homeland, Brittany.

Years and centuries have passed, but the memory of this battle remains engraved in the landscape of Neïz Vran. A great oak, majestic and imposing, overlooks the shore, a symbol of the resilience and memory of those ancient times.

Every year, in November, when the moon shines high in the sky, seabirds gather on the branches of this oak tree. These birds, with black-and-white plumage, bear a strange bloodstain on their foreheads. In the heart of the night, a tired young crow then appears, settling at the very top of the oak. With a voice filled with nostalgia and sorrow, he murmurs:

"Sing, sing for me, little birds of my homeland, you who did not die far from Brittany."

At this call, the birds begin an enchanting song, so profoundly beautiful that even the sea stands still, the waves stop moving, and the wind ceases to blow, creating a sacred silence in which to listen to this melody.

If you pass through this area, take advantage of the silence as a moment of listening, and pay attention to the crows nearby.
