Divination cowries speak without sentences. They respond through signs, rhythms, and open/closed patterns. So when you are looking for a “yes” or a “no,” the temptation to ask a closed question is strong. But does this type of question work with cowries? The answer depends on your approach, your intention, and the connection you establish with the tool. It is not forbidden, but it is not automatic either.

1. Can cowries say yes or no?

Yes, cowries can give an answer that resembles a “yes” or a “no,” especially with a simple four-piece reading. Zero or just one open cowrie can signify a clear no or a current impossibility. Three or four open cowries can confirm movement, a green light, or agreement. But this direct reading only works if the question has been asked clearly, with a steady intention.

A cowrie reading does not work like a switch. It does not decide for you. It shows a direction, an opening, or an atmosphere. If you ask a closed question but are looking for an overly precise answer, you risk misinterpreting it.

2. How can you ask a closed question without limiting the reading?

You can ask a closed question if you remain open to nuance. The point is not to force the cowries to say “yes” or “no,” but to ask them whether there is a path, an energy, or permission. You do not say, “Should I do this?” Instead, you might ask: “Is this path open now?” Or: “Is the energy supporting me in this action?”

This change in wording transforms the closed question into a space for interpretation. You are seeking insight, not a verdict. Cowries work better when you let them breathe.

3. What should you do if the reading does not answer clearly?

If you ask a closed question and the cowries give an ambiguous reading (two open, two closed), it is a call to rephrase the question. Perhaps the question is poorly worded, or perhaps it carries a fear disguised as a request. It may also be that the answer cannot be reduced to yes or no. Vagueness in the answer often reveals vagueness in the intention.

You can write down the question, let it rest, and ask it again later in a different way. You can also draw again, not to repeat the question, but to explore it more deeply: “What should I see about this?” or “Why does the answer remain blocked?”

4. Can you always use closed questions?

No. If you draw cowries only to obtain yes or no answers, you block their language. They are not tools of control. They are allies for exploring, sensing, and moving forward. They accept direct questions, but they prefer sincere ones. A closed question asked without sincerity produces an empty answer.

You can ask a closed question when you are ready to hear any kind of answer. If you accept only a yes, it is not a reading. It is an expectation.

Using cowries for a closed question is possible. But only if you know how to listen to what they truly want to say. And sometimes, what they say goes beyond your question.
