What does the Venus symbol mean in astrology?

3 min read

The Venus glyph, ♀, consists of a circle placed above a small cross. NASA describes it as a stylized representation of the mirror of the goddess of love, an interpretation that has become standard in modern culture. In Greco-Roman astrology, the planet is connected to Aphrodite and then to Venus, inheriting themes of desire, beauty, harmony, pleasure, alliance, and fertility. In traditional astrology, it is one of the two great benefics along with Jupiter. In alchemy, the same symbol designates copper.

Where does the shape ♀ come from?

The symbol shows a circle surmounting a cross. NASA repeats the classic interpretation of the “mirror of Venus,” as if the circle represented the mirror and the cross its handle.

This explanation is very widespread, but it is prudent to present it as a traditional reading of the shape rather than as a demonstrated fact about the glyph’s earliest origin.

Unicode records ♀ as FEMALE SIGN, specifies its equivalence with Venus, and notes its alchemical use for copper. The character has therefore retained several functions over time.

How does the goddess shape the planet?

Aphrodite in the Greek world and Venus in the Roman world govern love, desire, beauty, and attraction. Astrology attributes to the planet qualities consistent with this divine personality.

The Oxford Research Encyclopedia gives the explicit example of Aphrodite: the planet Venus represents love because the deity associated with it herself has this function.

The connection is therefore not a modern psychological invention. Since antiquity, the planet has carried part of the character of the goddess who gives it its Latin name.

What does Venus represent in tradition?

Venus belongs to the benefic planets of traditional astrology. It promotes harmony, pleasure, union, beauty, music, adornment, relationships, and what attracts rather than divides.

It rules Taurus and Libra. Its meanings change according to its position, dignities, aspects, and the question asked of the chart.

The modern interpretation “Venus = romantic love” covers only part of the traditional scope. Venus also speaks of value, taste, harmony, sociability, and the ability to bring people together.

Why does Venus correspond to copper?

The alchemical system associates Venus with copper. Unicode preserves this equivalence by indicating that ♀ is also the alchemical symbol for this metal.

Tradition notably links copper to Cyprus, an island strongly associated with the worship of Aphrodite in antiquity. The metal and the goddess are thus brought together across several cultural layers.

This correspondence completes the classical series: Sun-gold, Moon-silver, Mercury-quicksilver, Venus-copper, Mars-iron, Jupiter-tin, and Saturn-lead.

How does the symbol also become the sign of the feminine?

The ♀ glyph is now used as a sign of the female sex in biology, genealogy, and popular culture. Unicode calls it FEMALE SIGN.

This use derives from the ancient association of Venus with femininity, but it has acquired an existence independent of the astrological context.

The parallel with Mars ♂ is direct: the two planetary glyphs have become the modern signs of the feminine and masculine, although their history began in a system of planets and deities.

Historical sources and reference points

The NASA presents ♀ as the symbol of Venus and follows the traditional interpretation of the goddess's mirror. Unicode documents its uses for Venus, the feminine, and copper. For the Aphrodite/Venus connection in ancient astrology, see the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Planetary Science.
