The kola nut (Cola spp.) holds an important place in several religious traditions of West Africa, particularly among the Yoruba. Much more than a simple magical ingredient, it plays a role in relationships between human beings, deities, and ancestors. Presented, shared, or consulted according to precise rules, it accompanies prayer, offerings, and certain forms of consultation with the sacred.
Offering and communication with the deities
The kola nut may be presented as an offering when making a request to a deity, in accordance with the customs of the tradition being practiced. It also serves an important function in certain ritual commitments and agreements: offered and shared before an invoked power, it can help solemnize a word or pact by symbolically placing it under the gaze of the sacred. Its use therefore goes far beyond modern magical correspondences that sometimes reduce this nut to luck or prosperity.
A nut used for divination
The kola nut is also used in certain West African divination practices. Depending on the tradition, it is divided into lobes or pieces, which are then cast; their arrangement is interpreted as a ritual response. This consultation may accompany a question addressed to a deity or verify the acceptance of an offering.
