The Margot Fairies

3 min read

As you may know, Aeternum is backed by a small business based in Brittany (in the south of Finistère, to be precise). It is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and more or less well-known magical practices (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to showcase our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

In the mysterious lands of Côtes-d’Armor, Mont Croquelien rises majestically, a granite chaos born in the Primary Era, hundreds of millions of years ago. Over the millennia, this place has been sculpted by winds and rain, giving rise to a landscape where nature seems to have engaged in an eternal dance between vegetation and stone. But this site is also the birthplace of an ancient legend: that of the Margot fairies.

The Margot fairies

The Margot fairies, all sisters, were born on this mountain, where granite slabs form vast natural paths. It was on these stones that the Margots, fairies as mischievous as they were discreet, gathered on full-moon nights to dance beneath the stars. These creatures, said to possess unparalleled beauty, had a charm capable of silencing the birds and stopping the wind, if only so they could be observed more closely.

The Margots all belonged to the same fairy dynasty, renowned for their ability to blend into the landscape. It was said that they had the power to disappear at will, leaving behind only the gentle scent of wildflowers. They were the guardians of Mont Croquelien, watching over its secrets and treasures, including a famous golden barrel buried beneath one of three adjoining rocks, known as "Margot's Wallet."

But this treasure was not intended for humans. In fact, they did not like them at all, which was why they preferred to torment them. According to legend, anyone who tried to seize it would be condemned to a terrible fate: transformed into stone, they would become part of the granite chaos, eternally frozen in place for daring to defy the fairies. This fate deterred many curious visitors and gold seekers, thereby preserving the mystery of Mont Croquelien.

As you walk along the mountain’s paths, you can still discover the traces left by the Margot fairies. Two holly trees that have taken root between granite blocks create a natural arch, like a doorway to another world. Farther on, a bathtub carved into the stone, called "Margot's Bathtub," bears witness to the fairies' presence, as does a granite armchair where, it is said, the eldest of the Margots would sit to watch over the mountain.

The inhabitants of Gouray-Le Mené nevertheless claim to know the treasure's location. But this information is as confidential as the treasure itself.

So if you happen to pass by, stay in your place to avoid becoming a cold, immobile rock...
