If you are discovering the world of magic as a whole (high, black, red, blue, green,...), including through our online esoteric shop, you will often come across the terms rituals, spells, incantations, and many others. To bring a little order to all of this, I offer you this note, which helps distinguish between what are known as magical acts.

1. Invocation

Invocation is a process through which the magician calls upon an entity, deity, force, or spirit so that it may enter them or be present at their side. In doing so, the practitioner seeks to harmonize their own consciousness with the qualities, energies, or attributes of the invoked entity. The aim is often to draw inspiration from these qualities and receive guidance, protection, or support as part of a specific magical working. Invocation can lead to altered states of consciousness, in which the magician feels imbued with the energies of the entity called upon, thereby facilitating a direct experience of communion or divine inspiration. It is an act of partnership and integration with the invoked forces, in which the magician opens themselves inwardly to receive and integrate subtle influences within their being.

2. Evocation

Unlike Invocation, Evocation is a practice in which the magician calls entities, spirits, or forces to appear before them or within a sacred space prepared for the occasion (a Magical Triangle), without seeking to integrate them into themselves. Evocation is often performed within a magical circle or a ritually delimited space, ensuring the magician's protection while allowing them to communicate with the entity. The purpose of Evocation may be to request the entity's help in achieving a specific magical effect, obtain information, or command specific tasks. Evocation requires careful preparation, knowledge of the names, sigils, and characteristics of the entity to be evoked, as well as mastery of protection and control techniques to ensure that the interactions remain beneficial and under control.

3. Divination

Divination represents a complex discipline within the occult arts, in which the practitioner, often referred to as the magician or diviner, employs various techniques to transcend the boundaries of ordinary sensory perception. In doing so, they seek to access information that is not directly available through the five senses, thereby exploring dimensions beyond everyday experience.

At the heart of these practices are universal symbols and archetypes, which serve as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious, thereby facilitating access to deeper wisdom or hidden messages.

Divination is not limited solely to predicting the future. It can also offer introspection, help with decision-making, and reveal underlying dynamics in complex situations. By reaching beyond the senses, it encourages the practitioner to develop inner awareness and sensitivity to the significant signs and coincidences that appear in their life.

4. Enchantment

Enchantment includes all the methods through which a practitioner of magic seeks to shape and influence reality according to their will. These methods can be divided into two subcategories:

  • Spells are typically formulas or incantations intended to mobilize magical energies in order to achieve a specific objective. They are generally performed only once.

  • Rituals can be understood as sequences of actions, sometimes repeated regularly, often symbolic and performed with a precise intention, which aim to manifest concrete results in the material world or influence the subtle planes of existence.

5. Illumination

Illumination is a path of personal transformation and awakening that goes far beyond the simple accumulation of occult knowledge or skills. It is the cornerstone of an inner journey aimed at revealing and realizing the individual's full potential by harmonizing their will, soul, and spirit with the universal laws and invisible forces that orchestrate existence.

This quest for Illumination manifests through a series of transformative practices and experiences, in which the individual learns to truly know themselves, understand the mysteries of the universe, and align themselves with a higher order of truth and wisdom. It involves a commitment to spiritual development, in which the autosuggestion of enchantments plays a crucial role. Through self-enchantment rituals, the practitioner works to transcend their limitations, whether perceived as flaws or weaknesses, and cultivate desired qualities and abilities. These enchantments act as catalysts for personal growth, facilitating inner transformation and the expansion of consciousness.

At the same time, Illumination draws on the practice of Divination and Invocation to navigate the path toward self-knowledge and cosmic alignment. Divination serves as a compass, offering perspectives and revelations that guide the practitioner in their life choices, decisions, and spiritual evolution. It provides access to levels of understanding that go beyond the framework of logic and reason, opening the door to profound and often symbolic wisdom.
