1. A recognizable bottle |
The genuine Murray & Lanman Florida Water is used in many spiritual traditions around the world, particularly in Haitian Vodou, Santería, curanderismo, and hoodoo. It has acquired a special status because of its specific composition, recognizable fragrance, and the ritual energy it radiates. But given the many copies and imitations on the market, it is becoming important to know how to tell the genuine product from altered or counterfeit versions.
1. A recognizable bottle
The Murray & Lanman Florida Water bottle is one of its distinguishing features. It is a slender bottle, generally made of transparent plastic, containing 221 ml, with a highly colorful label depicting a garland of flowers, crests, and the name “Florida Water” in gold or blue lettering.
On the label, you should always see the manufacturer’s name: Murray & Lanman, as well as Lanman & Kemp-Barclay, which is the parent company. The overall design has an old-fashioned, almost Victorian style and is visually very ornate.
The original bottle has a screw cap (sometimes gold or silver), and the liquid inside is slightly tinted, a very pale yellow or almost colorless.
2. A very distinctive fragrance
The fragrance of authentic Florida Water is sharp, citrusy, and fresh, with a strong citrus note, as well as deeper spicy accents (clove, cinnamon) and lavender. It is hard to mistake: it slightly tingles the nose, leaves a clean sensation, and evaporates quickly while leaving a clear trace.
Copies sometimes smell too sweet, too floral, or, conversely, too alcoholic. The original fragrance is balanced, penetrating, complex yet clear. It does not leave a heavy chemical impression.
3. Origin and price
Authentic Florida Water is made in Peru or the United States, depending on the production lines. It is sold in reputable esoteric shops, botánicas, or specialized websites. Its price is generally stable, usually around 8 to 12 euros, depending on the supplier and place of purchase.
A price that is too low or a bottle without the official markings should immediately raise concerns. Counterfeits circulate in similar-looking but simplified or poorly printed packaging, or with slightly altered names.
You can also look for the wording “Peruvian Florida Water by Murray & Lanman” on certain bottles sold for Afro-Caribbean practices.
4. Why does authenticity matter?
The original formula has been used for more than a century. It carries a collective ritual memory. It has been consecrated through use, through the hands, prayers, and purification gestures it has accompanied. A counterfeit, even one that looks similar, does not carry this trace. It may smell good, but it does not work in the same way.
Recognizing genuine Murray & Lanman Florida Water means respecting an invisible lineage. And within this simple bottle, an entire world of living practices is preserved, in the hands of those who know how to look.
