How to incorporate palo santo into a protection ritual?

palo santo is not used only for cleansing. It can also be used for protection, meaning creating a safe space, strengthening your energetic boundaries, or repelling anything that disrupts your balance. Its warm fragrance, dense and clear vibration, and slow rhythm make it the perfect wood for supporting energetic defense.

Integrating palo santo into a protection ritual means creating a calm but firm fire that holds the boundary without aggression.

1. Start by cleansing

Before establishing protection, you begin by cleansing the space. You light your palo santo stick, let the flame go out, then waft the smoke into the corners of the room, around the doors and windows, and around yourself. You clear away what clutters, what stagnates, and what interferes.

This first pass opens the space and clears the way. It does not drive anything away by force. It prepares the ground.

You can accompany this gesture with a clear intention: “I make room for what protects me.”

2. Cast a protection circle

Once the air is clear, you can walk slowly around the room with the lit stick, tracing a circle of smoke, or circle around your altar. If you are working for yourself, you can circle your body, from head to toe, calmly, breathing with the wood.
