At Litha, fire is not just one symbol among others. It is the heart of the sabbat, the direct expression of the sun at its peak, of expanding vital force, and of the power of transformation. Performing a fire ritual at Litha means entering into dialogue with this blazing light, honoring what it illuminates, and letting go of what no longer has a place.

This fire is not destructive. It is liberating.

1. Why perform a fire ritual at Litha?

Fire at Litha serves to celebrate, purify, intensify, and renew. It allows you to express your gratitude for what is growing, while also letting resistance, doubts, and fears be consumed. It transforms intention into action.

In the countryside, people used to light great fires, around which they danced or jumped to attract luck, fertility, and health. Even a tiny fire retains this ancestral power.

The size of the fire is not what matters. It is the presence you bring before it.

2. How do you prepare your fire?

You can use a brazier, an incense cup, a candle, or even a golden candle if you are indoors. What matters is that this fire be dedicated to this precise moment. You are not lighting a flame out of habit. You are inviting it as a force.

Prepare a small bowl of solar dried herbs (lavender, rosemary, St. John’s wort, bay leaf), a piece of paper on which you write one thing to let go of, and an offering (grain, flower, drop of honey, twig, fruit).

Stand facing the fire in silence. Breathe. Then clearly speak aloud what you wish to give thanks for, followed by what you are ready to release.

Slide the paper and herbs into the flame. Watch until they are completely consumed. Leave your offering, then remain in its presence a little longer.

The fire receives. It does not take by force.

3. What should you do afterward?

Extinguish the flame respectfully, or let it burn down completely if you can. You can then bury the ashes in a sunny patch of earth, or scatter them into the wind at sunrise the following day.

You can also keep a small extinguished ember or a piece of charred wood as a trace of what you have released.

A Litha fire is never neutral. It transmits, transforms, and illuminates. And in the warmth it leaves behind, you can continue moving forward more lightly.
