Taurus

9 min read

Taurus is the second sign of the tropical zodiac. After the impulse of Aries, it gives form, duration, and substance to what has just been born. An earth sign, fixed, feminine, and nocturnal in ancient classifications, it seeks to maintain, nourish, and make fruitful rather than initiate a new beginning.

Venus rules Taurus, and the Moon receives its exaltation there. This double dignity connects the sign with harmony, fertility, resources, sensual pleasures, and the preservation of whatever possesses value. To understand its action in a chart, however, one must examine Venus, the house occupied, and the planets present.

The Fixed Sign at the Heart of Spring

In the tropical zodiac, Taurus occupies the 30° following Aries. It corresponds to the moment when the season that began at the equinox settles into the Northern Hemisphere. Ancient authors classified it among the “solid” signs, now called fixed signs: it stabilizes a condition that has already begun and enables it to endure.

This fixity gives Taurus its strength of continuity. It consolidates, accumulates, maintains, and resists whatever threatens an established form. Its pace is not mere slowness: it favors the test of time, repetition, and security acquired through concrete means.

The useful distinction: stability does not mean immobility. Taurus changes when a new situation offers lasting value or when what it was protecting can no longer be preserved. Its difficulty lies less in change itself than in abandoning a tangible support without sufficient assurance.

The Traditional Nature of Taurus

Taurus belongs to the earth triplicity along with Virgo and Capricorn. William Lilly attributes to it a cold and dry, feminine, nocturnal, fixed, and bestial nature. Its animal figure, the bull, evokes contained power: pulling strength, endurance, herd fertility, and attachment to nourishing territory.

Venus has its nocturnal domicile in Taurus. There, it organizes harmony, attraction, and pleasure through matter: resources, food, adornment, music, harmonious forms, and bodily pleasures. This earthly Venus is not limited to luxury; it knows how to assess, preserve, and make fruitful whatever is entrusted to it.

The Moon is exalted in Taurus, with its degree of exaltation set at 3° of the sign. Its functions of growth, nourishment, protection, and bodily continuity find stable ground. Mars, by contrast, is in detriment, opposite its domicile in Scorpio: Martian action must accept a slower pace, greater resistance, and material issues it cannot simply cut through.

  • Stability: maintaining a form, remaining faithful to a rhythm, and resisting dispersion.
  • Fertility: growth, upkeep, and the ability to make a resource productive.
  • Value: assessment of what deserves to be acquired, preserved, or passed on.
  • Sensitivity: direct relationship with touch, taste, sound, and bodily comfort.
  • Endurance: steady strength, patience, and continuity of effort.
  • Retention: difficulty giving up a possession, habit, or source of security when Venus is poorly placed.

How to interpret Taurus in a chart

First identify the house occupied by Taurus. It indicates the area where the person seeks to consolidate, preserve, and make things flourish. Then look for Venus: its house shows where this search for stability is directed, while its sign, dignities, and aspects clarify the means.

Factor What to observe Useful question
House occupied by Taurus Concrete area of the chart Where must value be built, maintained, or protected?
Venus, ruler of Taurus House, sign, dignities, sect, and aspects Who administers the sign’s resources and agreements?
Planets in Taurus Nature and condition of each planet Which planetary function adopts a fixed, earthy rhythm?
Moon Exaltation, phase, speed, and aspects How are growth, nourishment, and continuity supported?
Mars Detriment and any receptions How does action combine with duration and the resistance of matter?
Exact degree Terms, decans, aspects, and fixed stars Which secondary ruler adds nuance to the condition of the sign?

An empty house in Taurus acts through Venus. A planet present in the sign does not automatically become calm or materialistic: it receives a fixed, earthy way of exercising its functions, the result of which depends on its actual condition in the chart.

Taurus in the twelve houses

The house shows where Taurus seeks continuity and security. The following indications describe a general mode of operation; Venus and any planets present determine the concrete quality of this stability.

Taurus position Stabilized area Possible expression
In the First House Body, conduct, initiative Calm presence, consistency in choices, and the need to move forward on solid ground.
In the Second House Assets, income, resources Close attention to heritage, the value of things, and income continuity.
In the Third House Writing, close surroundings, travel Measured speech, learning through repetition, and lasting ties with the immediate environment.
In the Fourth House Home, parents, land, the end of things Attachment to the home, land, and family continuity.
In the Fifth House Children, pleasures, creations A taste for sensual pleasures, lasting creations, and consistent investment in children.
In the Sixth House Illness, service, forced work Endurance in repetitive tasks, with a risk of maintaining a burden that has become too heavy.
In the Seventh House Spouse, partner, adversary The pursuit of stable commitments, tangible agreements, and partners able to keep their word.
In the Eighth House Debts, inheritances, other people's property Prudent management of shared resources, inheritances, and financial obligations.
In the Ninth House Travel, faith, law, knowledge Enduring convictions, knowledge acquired slowly, and the pursuit of a doctrine applicable to reality.
In the Tenth House Profession, public action, authority A career built over time, a reputation for reliability, and the pursuit of visible results.
In the Eleventh House Friends, supporters, hopes Loyal friendships, useful alliances, and projects developed with patience.
In the Twelfth House Isolation, hidden enemies, ordeals Attachments that are difficult to break, immobilized resources, or silent endurance in the face of obstacles.

The seven planets in Taurus

Each planet receives from Taurus a fixed, earthy, Venusian rhythm. Some have a major dignity in the sign; others must rely on their ruler, receptions, and aspects to fully express their functions.

Planet in Taurus Traditional condition Possible expression
Sun No major dignity across the sign Steady will, authority founded on continuity, and a need to produce tangible results.
Moon Exaltation Strong capacity for growth, protection, and regulation of material and bodily needs.
Mercury No major dignity across the sign Concrete thinking, strong memory, and speech that favors verifiable facts.
Venus Nocturnal domicile Great ability to assess, unite, embellish, and preserve; pleasures take a tangible form.
Mars Detriment Slow but tenacious action; anger may build up when movement remains blocked for a long time.
Jupiter No major dignity across the sign Gradual expansion, material generosity, and the pursuit of lasting prosperity.
Saturn No major dignity across the sign Patience, conservation, and material discipline; risk of rigidity or fear of losing what has been acquired.

The slow planets have no traditional dignity in Taurus. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto can complement a contemporary reading, but their prolonged stay in a sign primarily describes a generation. Their personal significance becomes clearer near an angle or in a tight aspect with a visible planet.

Venus, ruler of Taurus, in the twelve houses

The house of Venus indicates where the affairs of Taurus are directed. It shows the area in which stability, agreement, attraction, and value can take shape. Venus’s dignity clarifies whether these resources are readily available or require mediation.

Venus’s position Direction given to Taurus Possible interpretation
In the First House Toward the body and conduct The pursuit of agreement, pleasure, and stability becomes visible in one’s manner of being.
In the Second House Toward resources Venus supports the acquisition, appraisal, and preservation of assets when well placed.
In the Third House Toward close exchanges Conciliatory speech, a taste for writing, and pleasant relations with the immediate surroundings.
In the Fourth House Toward home and land The pursuit of domestic harmony, appreciation of heritage, and attachment to familiar places.
In the Fifth House Toward pleasures and creations Venus favors the arts, celebrations, love, and bonds with children.
In the Sixth House Toward service and trial Agreement is built through daily tasks, care, or a subordinate working relationship.
In the Seventh House Toward partners and adversaries Unions, contracts, and negotiations become the main setting for Venusian conciliation.

In the Tenth House Toward public action Venus connects the career with diplomacy, the arts, the trade of pleasant goods, or the pursuit of agreement.
In the Eleventh House Toward allies and projects Fruitful friendships, favorable support, and collective projects built through cooperation.
In the Twelfth House Toward isolation and obstacles Discreet affections, private pleasures, or difficulty making Venus’s resources visible.

Traditional correspondences of Taurus

These correspondences bring together the main classifications of the tropical zodiac and the dignities transmitted by ancient astrology. The day, metal, and colors are Venusian associations: they derive from the sign’s ruler and do not constitute an independent rulership.

Exaltation Moon, at 3° Taurus The Moon receives a major dignity throughout the sign.
Detriment Mars Mars is opposite its nocturnal domicile in Scorpio.

Venusian correspondences Friday, copper, white, and green Associations derived from Venus, used notably in ritual astrology.

Presenting Taurus as the “natural ruler” of the Second House belongs to the modern natural zodiac. In an actual chart, the second house depends on the sign on its cusp and its own ruler. Taurus rules the Second House only when it actually occupies it.

Advice for reading Taurus accurately

  1. Do not reduce the sign to money. More broadly, it concerns continuity, value, matter, and what nourishes life.
  2. Judge Venus first. Its house and condition show how Taurus’s resources can be gathered and preserved.
  3. Observe the Moon. Its exaltation illuminates the sign’s ability to support growth, needs, and continuity.
  4. Distinguish patience from retention. Stability protects a construction; it becomes an obstacle when it maintains a form that no longer has value.
  5. Examine receptions. A planet in Taurus may receive support or opposition depending on its relationship with Venus.
  6. Place the sign in its house. The same Taurus does not act in the same way in the possessions of House II as it does in the alliances of House XI.

Key point: Taurus brings duration and substance. Its strength lies in the ability to nourish a form, recognize its value, and maintain it until it bears fruit. Venus always shows what deserves to be united, appreciated, and preserved.

The chart replaces neither judgment nor facts

A Taurus placement proves neither greed, laziness, nor a systematic refusal of change. Nor does it make it possible to predict a neck or throat disorder. Behavior is judged by actions, and health by medical examination. Astrology offers a symbolic interpretation whose value depends on the complete chart and the real-life context.
